Rolfing® always strives to enhance the client’s breathing comfort and inspirational capacity by opening and balancing the muscles and fascia–the myofascia–that surrounds the ribcage. It makes sense, then, to start the Rolfing process upon and around the ribcage in preparation for the interconnecting myofascial work that will extend out to the limbs from the core or center of the body.
Think of this as the center of a wheel from which all movement emanates outward to the ends of the arms and legs. Imagine the breathing motion around the entire ribcage–front, sides and back–as a bellows that elongates the entire body with each breath. Breath can be a focus to remind everyone to relax and reset their posture and tension state, so it’s importance is paramount to the goals of Rolfing to positively affect everyones’ physical and mental health.
Client Participation:
As the photos demonstrate, the client actively extends his elbows back and forth while adding a deep breath during the Rolfing process. This triad of Rolfing, breath and expansive movement permits the Rolfer’s
manipulation to act as a connecting bridge, joining the internal stretching of breath with the external stretching of the arms and legs. This stronger, internal-to-external connection amplifies and encourages movement to begin from the center or core of the body–the spine and hips– working and wending its way out to the limbs.
