Rolfing® is a therapeutic process of hands-on physical manipulation and directed movement that reorganizes and balances the soft connective tissue,or myofascia, that surrounds the muscles throughout the entire body.
Rolfing’s benefits enhance posture, improves movement and mobility, relieves tense muscles, and increases a person’s general feeling of well being.
Why Rolfing?
· Gravity is a powerful force that constantly works against the body.
· Poor body posture, physical injury, emotional trauma or repetitive movement causes the body to compensate, assuming un-natural positions and holding on to tension.
· Misalignment affects the whole person; body, mind and spirit.
· Generally people seek out Rolfing due to pain in a certain area of the body, injury or poor posture.
· Rolfing releases the body’s patterns of “holding” and tension thus creating balance and fluid movement.
Benefits of Rolfing
· Relief from debilitating chronic pain.
· Increased energy, flexibility and balance.
· Better posture and easier breathing.
· Recovery from repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome,
etc.
· Resolution of trauma.
· Increased self-awareness.
· A feeling of wholeness.
· Enhanced performance, appearance and personal growth.
· Improved outlook and ability to handle changes in life.
Why Do People Get Rolfed®?
Stress of any kind shortens and tightens the body. Over time, that tightness will lock into connective tissue and diminish flexibility and
cause chronic pain until it is released. People who suffer from all kinds of chronic muscular pain will seek out Rolfing®. Athletes and performers of all kinds use Rolfing® to enhance their overall balance and body awareness as part of a lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, exercise and a
holistic understanding of health.
Rolfing offers great benefits to computer users whose
posture, shoulders, arms, and wrists become uncomfortable from long hours of use.
How Does Rolfing® Work?
First, Sam slowly uses his hands and forearms to apply a broad pressure across the muscles, then asks clients to breath deeply while they stretch out and move their limbs. This combined effect slowly releases adhesions,
strains and sprains that have set into the connective tissue, also called the myofascia, which is the fibrous web which binds muscles, bones and organs together. The relative flexibility of connective tissues determines how easily muscles will move, therefore Sam works on the connective tissue to help free the muscles to move most efficiently.
How Is It Set Up?
The basic Rolfing process is a series of ten sessions, each of which is about 1 hour to 1 1/4 hours long.
http://www.rolf.org/about/10series.htm
Most people come once a week, although the scheduling is flexible.
For instance, try a session- if you are satisfied with the
results- then try a block of 3 sessions to give the Rolfing a fair trial.
You can leave the Rolfing series at this point confident of improved balance and posture; or, you can take a break from Rolfing for a month or two if required by scheduling or finances. If you wish to continue the Rolfing
series, then schedule the next block of four sessions, leave, or take another break, and finally finish the final block of three.
To summarize, you can come and go after sessions 1,3,7, and 10. Total time for the 10 session completion can extend up to 6 months. After the 10 sessions, clients usually return every month or two to receive an advanced
refresher session so as to maintain their postural gains and keep their stress levels down.
When you come in for your appointment, Sam will spend some time taking a medical history and talking to you about your body and what goals you have for the work. Rolfing® clients wear their gym or loose fitting yoga clothes while they are getting worked on. Clients sometimes take pictures of themselves with their cellphones before the process so they can record their progress.
Sam also take pictures of clients with their cellphones performing stretching exercises that he demonstrates to them so they can keep building upon the postural and movement gains they have achieved.
How Does Rolfing® Improve Posture, Alignment or Structure?
Rolfers look at the body and ask themselves the following questions:
“Is this body balanced in gravity?”
“Is the posture upright and at ease?”
“When the client walks, do their limbs move with grace and ease or are there limitations and resrictions with their stride from the
shoulder and hips out through the arms and legs?”
Rolfers realign the structure of the body so standing is comfortable and movement is efficient. While most people talk about “good posture,” i.e.
working to hold themselves upright, Rolfers talk about “good structure,”or resting comfortably in alignment with gravity.
Who Was Dr.Ida Rolf,PH.D?
http://www.rolf.org/about/history.htm
After earning her doctorate in biochemistry from Columbia University, Dr. Rolf’s research centered on connective tissue physiology. Her studies led her to make several observations about human structure:
• most people are out of alignment with gravity’s pull
• our function improves as we are brought into line with gravity
• bodies can be aligned in gravity through fascial manipulation, owing to fascia’s inherent plasticity.
The Rolfing “Ten Series” is the culmination of Dr. Rolf’s fundamental discoveries coupled with her fifty years of study and practice.
She went on to develop Rolfing® over a 30 year period. Ida Rolf created
the Rolf® Institute in the late 1960′s after many years of writing and lecturing.
What About the Emotional or Psychological Element in Rolfing®?
Any time we have an emotion of any kind it is felt by and takes place in the soft tissue of the body. Over time, chronic and emotional states like stress, fear or sadness get recorded in the muscles and connective tissue of the body. Sometimes a specific trauma or event will be held or recorded in a particular part of the body. When that part of the body gets worked on in Rolfing, the Rolfing client may remember the incident, trauma or accident that occurred in that area. Rolfers sometimes call this “muscle
memory.” As the Rolfing® client’s body becomes freer and more liberated, often that person’s emotions will feel unburdened and his mind will feel clearer. Sam has some clients who will see him before they see their
psychological therapist
Is Rolfing® Uncomfortable?
No, it is not.
The old style Rolfing of the 1960′s and 1970′s was much different from the Rolfing that Sam Adams practices today.
Sam uses a little skin lotion–not oil- upon the skin so there is no uncomfortable skin friction, gently applies a broad pressure to the client
instead of a pointed, bruising pressure when applying the Rolfing manipulation, has clients breath deeply to expand and elongate, and
finally, has clients stretch out and twist through the arms and legs to amplify and reinforce the structural changes of Rolfing.
Rolfers use pressure and stretching to change and release the connective
tissue. Often people will remember or “feel” an old injury or pain as it is
released and that is followed by the feeling of relief and well-being as flexibility and balance is restored to those areas.
If I Get Rolfed, Will the Changes Last?
The changes will not only last, but they even continue to improve! Here
is how it works: The body’s shape and condition is constantly being
maintained and recreated by it’s movement patterns. If the movement pattern are imbalanced and stressful they will continue to break down the structure. After Rolfing, the movement patterns begin to improve or recreate a balanced structure. Through the improved movement patterns made possible by a more flexible structure, the Rolfing® continues after the 10 sessions have been completed.
Will Old Postural Habits Pull My Body Back Out of Alignment?
Firstly, your Rolfer will give you guidance on how to move and hold yourself in a way that will maintain and enhance the changes. Secondly, the body naturally will want to do what is more balanced and efficient because it will be more comfortable. And third, Sam will demonstrate and record effective postural exercises to help you maintain, strengthen and continue your
structural improvement.
What Is Advanced Rolfing®?
After the basic Rolfing® is completed, the body evolves and changes and in time deeper, more subtle work becomes possible. The advanced Rolfing® is
designed for the Rolfing® client who has already had the basic 10 session series.
Rolfing ® helps people
*stand taller* *move easier* *reduce pain* *and feel energize
