Structural Reason: Previously, in pictorial/demonstration number one, we had begun the Rolfing® process by Rolfing the chest and ribcage, which was accompanied by deep breaths and active stretching by the client, thereby futher improving the client’s breathing comfort, chest expansion and postural improvement possibilities.
Next we will continue the Rolfing process by Rolfing and actively stretching the entire left side of the body, starting at the hip, then working upwards across the side of ribcage, the shoulder, the arm, the wrist, the hand out to the ends of the fingers, then back to the hip and down the side of the leg, the knee, the lower leg, the ankle, and the foot out to the ends of the toes. As these areas are addressed with the Rolfing manipulation, the client, while lying on his side, will further assist his process by actively stretching and rotating simutaneously outwards from the side of hip, extending the entire left side through the ends of both the arm and the leg, When the client adds the deep, inspirational breathing during the active stretching exercises, the postural and increased movement goals of the Rolfing process are further enhanced.
Benefits:
The immediate and recognizable benefits will include a further enhancement of the respirational capacity by opening the side of the rib cage from the hip and shoulder, improving the balance of the shoulder girdle, then increasing the reach of the arm out from the shoulder, through the palm of the hand and fingers.
At the hip, stretching and loosening the myofascia around the femoral bone’s hip capsule will allow the leg to swing back and forth with greater ease, also it will take pressure off the side of the knee by stretching the iliotibial band, while helping the ankle and foot to track with greater alignment when the client walks.
Client Participation:
The client lies on his left side, stretches his arm up and outward with the wrist cocked back while extending the leg downward with the ankle cocked to increase the taughtness of the entire left side stretch. Then the client twists and rotates the limbs out even further from the center of hip while the Rolfing is being applied across the myofascia of the muscles.
We start the Rolfing from the side and top of the iliac crest of the hip, stretching up along the sides of the ribcage, opening the shoulder and Rolfing along the arm out to the palm and fingers. Now go back to the hip and Rolf in the other direction, down from the hip and across the iliotibial band to the knee, then advancing from the side
of the lower leg to the ankle, finishing on the edge of the foot and toes.
Client Participation
The client inhales deeply and extends the arm and leg away from the hip while locking the palm and foot to increase the tension along the side, then stretches away l so the hip and leg pushes down and the ribcage and arm stretches up both limbs twisting away from the center.
